See What You Have Done is a coming-of-age novella that takes place in the Depression. While one of novella's important themes is the fate of a family's two pigs (hence the cover), the main story is that of the close relationship of eleven-year-old Jane and her Uncle George, who once played in a blues band and now lives in the family's attic. Jane and George understand each other better than any one else, and their closeness has everything to do with the changes that take place in both their lives, especially once Jane starts taking piano lessons with Miss French, who went to high school with George.

See What You Have Done is one of a trilogy of novellas, Extraordinary Loves, about those rare and magical close human relationships that fall outside the category of conventional romance.

“This is a deeply good story, subtle and brutal. It is literature, troubling and incisive.” Abigail Padgett, author of Child of Silence, Bone Blind, Mandy Dru, and more.

See What You Have Done Extraordinary Loves eBook Ann Elwood

This was the second novel that I have read by Ann Elwood. In both stories I really liked the descriptions, the conversations and development of the main characters. In this tale, the plot is well-written and from the point of view of a young girl whose favorite uncle is the one person in the world who takes her as she is and helps her understand who she is. Through a series of growing-up events, for both the niece and uncle, the language of the story line expertly takes the reader into the setting and mind of the narrator, making a very believable and skillfully-developed story that reflects a typical American, small town family and neighborhood of the post-WWII era.

After a well-constructed introduction, the reader learns how the uncle, his pet parrot and his books live, up on the family's attic and in the shadow of his brother's family. How this quiet and rather existential uncle relates to his young niece is a key impetus for the plot, which easily motivates the reader to comfortably meander through the story line.

Later, when the favorite uncle takes up with a long lost, high school lady friend, unwittingly orchestrated by the loving and eager niece, the child sadly and gradually becomes secondary to her beloved uncle's life. Here the main character begins to evolve into an older, less-naive child, as the title suggests. At the rapid denouement and conclusion, the author leaves her readers, literally and figuratively, at the altar, as the uncle and lady friend begin to embark on their own life, necessarily separate from the beloved niece.

At the very abrupt conclusion, I suddenly felt abandoned by the author and wanting to know more about the new relationship between the uncle, his niece and new bride. As with the first novel by Ms. Elwood, I again found the rising action and character development of the story line to be very skillful. But, again, I felt cheated at the sudden conclusion of the tale.

If one enjoys tales about the joys and pains of growing up, this novel will surely satisfy. The skillful but spare writing is well-written and makes Ann Elwood and good author to expore.

See What You Have Done Extraordinary Loves eBook Ann Elwood Reviews

I loved this novella by Ann Elwood, about a sensitive little girl and her quirky uncle living in Depression era America.

Elwood has a unique voice, which includes a wry sense of humor, an unflinchingly clear view of what makes humans tick, exquisitely rendered descriptions, and a tender ability to portray animals of every shape and kind. I found the story profoundly moving.

If you haven't read any of Ann Elwood's other work, this is a great place to start, I would then recommend you read her book of short stories, The Dog Park, or her excellent biography of Rin-Tin-Tin The Movie Star.
