Crispian has lived in the city of Tutus all his life. He is used to the darkness that always cloaks the world, broken only by the lamps that huddle in the streets and winding alleys. He knows what it is to live in a segregated quarter, away from the prejudiced Rubrum race. He takes comfort in the company of his few friends, and the Minister--the only people who do not look twice at his missing eye and hand. But when he allows a young woman named Aiva to enter his life--a Rubrum, no less--Crispian comes under attack by forces he can neither see nor understand. Aiva assures him that she knows a place where he can find sanctuary from all of them. Can Crispian trust her to guide him safely out of Tutus, through the cursed ruins of an ancient city and the depths of an evil forest, to a realm that promises to be more wonderful than he can imagine? Or should he believe everything he's ever been taught, and return home before Aiva and the force behind the mysterious light on the horizon lead him to his death?

Amatus Alydia Rackham Books Reviews
It's an interesting concept for a story and quite short but still a pretty good read. This seems almost like a concept draft for a bigger more complete novel.
I encourage anyone sharing my mixed feelings about this book to check out some of the author's other work. She has a few real page-turners available.
A wonderful fantasy novel, riddled with mystery and depth, adventure and romance! Alydia fills the pages with true emotions, vivid imagery, and a beautiful allegory of our Savior's love for his lost sheep. I only wish there had been more to read! )
If you want to add even more dimension to the tale, be ready with a Latin dictionary. That aspect was quite fascinating for me.
Step into the compelling world of Crispian, where Alydia Rackham's otherworldly setting will trigger questions that you must have answered right away! Why is Crispian, and everyone he knows, flawed in some way? Why do they live in such darkness and isolation; circumstances that don't seem to bother a select few in their midst? And what is that captivating glow from which he simply cannot look away, despite the ominous warnings he's heard all his life to do exactly that?
Just when you feel like this story can't get any stranger, it will all seem strangely familiar. The farther you get into it, the more your heart is pulled in where only your mind is imagining. The more you will feel that you've come ~ home.
Alydia Rackham's writing never disappoints- it is gorgeously descriptive, changes to suit each character and story, and is a delight to read. This story is one of my favorites by her and absolutely perfect for a quick, lovely but intelligent read.
From the onset this story isn't what you expect, from Crispian and the city he lives in, to the mysterious Aiva who is unlike anything he's ever encountered. At any given time Alydia will make you feel Crispian's lonliness and fear, Aiva's striking faith, and the intense, aching desire to experience the world on the other side of Nox's darkness- Aurora. Even though this story is heavily allegorical it doesn't condescend to the reader or talk down to them. Instead every word seems to capture the hidden truths of the soul, our inherent longing for something better than the world we live in, and a desire to understand a higher power that can seem so remote and mysterious.
This book deserves a place on every shelf, next to Narnia and Tolkien. Truly a masterpiece that shouldn't be ignored.
The author has written a lovely allegory that has warmed my heart and lifted my spirit. I wish her all the best in future writing projects.
Amatus is a delightful book about trust, love, freedom, and faith. It's a stunning story that shares a 'Big Why' of this world. Rackham weaves truth into her plots and my soul is the richer for that. I could read her work over and over again. Such beauty and depth lies in her words.
Though short, this novella was a beautiful story that I read at exactly a time when the characters would speak most poignantly to me. While on it's surface it may seem like a simple fantasy tale, the meaning and depth in the message behind it is staggering, especially in the dark times we live in. It is Christian, but the message is one that can speak to anyone. I was sobbing through the last several chapters, not because they were sad, but because they resonated so deeply with things I've been struggling with of late. Worth reading if you feel alone or insignificant, and need to feel like there really is hope for something better out there.
